About the Artwork:
“Reaching the Surface” is the emotional sequel to my 2022 painting “I’m Treading Water,” which explored the weight of feeling stuck and directionless. In this piece, the figure is no longer suspended in place — she’s rising.

Though still submerged, her face turns upward toward the light, capturing a moment of clarity. The glowing surface above reflects a brighter future now within view. “Reaching the Surface” represents the turning point; although not a complete escape, but forward motion. A visual metaphor for emerging from emotional stagnation and choosing to rise, no matter how slow or uncertain the journey may be.
