This painting symbolizes destroying yourself--or the desire to--when going through emotions that are difficult to cope with. The somber expression on the girl's face indicates the feeling of regret and helplessness. 

Blue is a color that conveys fragility, sadness, coldness, and weakness. The butterflies are there to be a reminder that growth is possible, as well as hope for things to be easier in the near future.
